MIRACLES

EARLY CHRISTIAN THOUGHT
Augustine An interesting article on Augustine's views on miracles by Bruce L Shelley. It is concise and quite good.

Patristic thought on miracle This might be thought of as something of a way out site - "Prophecy on Line!" Nevertheless the author knows his stuff on the ideas of the early church fathers towards miracles.

Aquinas Aquinas believed strongly in the miracle of the mass.

Aquinas This is the general Faithnet article on miracles. Their link specifically to Aquinas seems not to be working. Even so I recommend the entire article.

EIGHTENTH CENTURY CRITICISMS
Hume
A good introduction to the life of David Hume. Very brief.

Miracles This is quite a long article from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, but there is a good deal of attention given to Hume. Scroll down and you will find it.

Hume Text This is the actual text of "An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding" SECTION X – "Of Miracles" by David Hume.

Hume A good article from the Skeptics Dictionary.

Hume discusssion Just to show there are two sides to every argument. This Christian site evaluates the arguments of David Hume.

TWENTIETH CENTURY EXISTENTIALIST MOVEMENT

As a group existentialists were not terribly concerned about Miracles. One exception though was the biblical scholar Rudolph Bultmann. "It is impossible to use electric light and the wireless and to avail ourselves of modern medical and surgical discoveries, and at the same time to believe in the New Testament world of spirits and miracles. We may think we can manage it in our own lives, but to expect others to do so is to make the Christian faith unintelligible and unacceptable to the modern world" (Rudolph Bultmann, "New Testament and Mythology," in Kerygma and Myth: A Theological Debate, ed. H. W. Bartsch, trans. R. H. Fuller (New York: Harper & Row, 1961), 5.

Bultmann A very brief biography of the man.

Miracles, Providence and Randomness This is a very pro-miracle article as one might expect from a publication called Gospel Gazette, but the author, John D Conley is aware and notes the contributions of serious scholars. A useful read.

OTHER TWENTIETH CENTURY COMMENTATORS

C.S. Lewis A brief biography of CS Lewis.

C.S. Lewis C.S. Lewis wrote a book on miracles which was widely read by theologians and non-theologians. This site prints out the text of chapter one of that book where Lewis sets out his thoughts and general view on the subject.

Critique of Lewis No everyone agreed with Lewis' views. This site at some length sets out to examine his views.

Maurice Wiles This article from Thomas Ash's "Atheist Ground" is useful on Maurice Wiles, but also on David Hume.

NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES
