PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION

This is what the examination board recommends
  • Cole P Philosophy of Religion Hodder & Stoughton (1999)
  • Cole P & Lee J Religious Language Abacus (1994)
  • Hick J Evil and the God of Love Macmillan (1985 edition)
  • Pailin D Groundwork or Philosophy of Religion Epworth Press (1984)
  • Raeper W & Smith L A Beginners Guide to Ideas Lion Publishing (1991)
  • Thompson M Philosophy: An Introduction Hodder & Stoughton (1995)
  • Thompson M Teach Yourself Philosophy of Religion Hodder & Stoughton (1997)
  • Vardy P The Puzzle of God HarperCollins (1990)
  • Waters J (ed.) Dialogue. A journal for sixth form Religious Studies
  • Webber J Faith and Reason Abacus (1995)
  • Webber J Revelation and Religious Experience Abacus (1995)
  • Webber J Life After Death Abacus (1996)
  • CD ROM World Library & Encyclopedia of Philosophy (2nd edition)
However, as always there are problems
All the Abacus publications are out of print and cannot be obtained for love nor money on the second-hand market. Abe Books the best second hand search engine doesn't list any.
The Lion book by Raeper & Smith is also out of print and I have had difficulty in obtaining copies of Mel Thompson's Philosophy.

WHERE TO START AND WHAT TO DO!

I strongly recommend starting at the end of the OCR syllabus with religious language. I can't imagine why they put it at the end. Read about the different ways in which words can be used. "Univocal" "eqivocal" "analogy" etc. Then look at the ways in which linguistic philosophers have tried to make religious language meaningful - or how they have simply tried to swot it!
