Philosophy and Ethics from where you are

Let's start with the essay that you can send at any time
I think the essay was

a) Explain how Descartes developed Anselm's argument that God's existence is necessary?[25]
b) Evaluate the claim that God's existence is not a logical necessity.[10]

If you look in your notes I think you will find that the person who opposed Descartes' argument was Kant.
Go on to your AS Religious Studies CD and look under "Philosophy" then the folder "No 5 The Ontological Argument"

There you should find 4 files.
Ignore the first one on Gaunilo.
The second one is a PowerPoint which would be a bit of happy revision on the Ontological Argument.
The third is a quick test on the Ontological Argument which you can print off and have a play with.
The fourth is the answer to your prayer for the essay.
It contains good notes on Descartes and then some notes which are very similar to the notes you would need for the second part of your essay. Hope you like the illustration about Father Christmas.

Now on to this week   PHILOSOPHY

I suggest you go on to your CD again and look in the Philosophy folder
The section you want is section 9 Problem of Evil.

We are going to look at the problem of evil and the solution or theodicy of St Augustine.

1. Print out or read the file "THE PROBLEM OF EVIL" - it should be the last file in the folder.
That should guide you through the initial stage of why evil is a problem. Basically you have to reckon with the fact there is supposed to be an omnipotent God (all powerful) who is omnibenevolent (all good) and in that case how come there is evil in the world?

Once you have read that:-
2. have a look at the PowerPoint GOD and EVIL.
Don't go any further than the end of the slides on Augustine.
I suggest you watch this several times until you feel you understand it.

Then go to here Augustine for a PDF file
or here if you want a Word Document Augustine
Fill out the answers. Highlight the document and paste it into the message box in "contact the webmaster" Any problems with this contact me via the site email or through school.

Next comes   ETHICS

We have been dealing with the topic of abortion, sanctity of life, quality of life.
You need to read the text book OCR Religious Ethics between pages 89-105
a lot of that will be revision from GCSE work.
Then go to this pagefor the acompanying worksheet which you will need to print off.

Any problems with this please get in touch via the "contact the webmaster" on the site.

All good wishes Robin Myerscough.
