What is the Christian teaching about the roles of men and women?

Bible Says

Old Testament
Man should be in charge. In he creation story Eve is the helper of Adam.
Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob have wives who followed them and were obedient to them.
The last of the Ten Commandments “Thou shall not covet” includes the wife alongside a man’s possessions.
There are few women in the Old Testament who achieved positions of responsibility. The exception was Deborah – a Judge Judges 4.

New Testament
A the time of Jesus, women did domestic chores and were not educated at school.
No women were rabbis.
Jesus chose only male disciples, but had a groups of women followers who went round with him Luke 8:1-3.

Paul’s letters
Speak about the Husband who is head of the wife as Christ is head of the church. Ephesians 5:22-24.

Modern Christians
The Bible does point out that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God
Even St Paul in Galatians 3:28 admits that in Christ there is neither male nor female.
It is unusual today for a wife to promise to obey her husband as one of the vows in the wedding service.
Although Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christians do not allow women to become priests, the Church of England, the Methodists and most Non-Conformist churches have equal opportunities for men and women in ministry.
