Describe the teachings which are found in a Christian marriage ceremony.
 
 

 

General
All the Christian churches support the institution of marriage.
They see it as taking place between a man and a woman.
It is intended to be a lifelong partnership, which elevates the human need to love and be loved. Many churches see it as a gift or a calling from God.

Roman Catholic Church
Marriage is a sacrament – one of seven sacraments in this church.
A sacrament n this case is a symbol in the life of the individual of the love of God.
Marriage is part of the way God directs creation. Man was not intended to live alone.
Marriage is based on what scripture teaches in the Old Testament and the New, so it is a sacred mystery which comes from God.

Church of England
Marriage is gift of God in creation so that men and women may live together in trust and in love.
Marriage is a means by which children should be born.
Marriage is an institution approved of by God because Jesus attended a wedding John 2:1-10.
Marriage is created by vows which the man and woman make.
These vows are that they will show mutual respect.
They will constantly support each other during times of hardship and plenty.
In sickness and in health.
Their vows are to be lifelong vows – until death.
