What is the Christian teaching about family life?

Bible

Old Testament
The Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all married and had children.
Genesis 24:60 Be the mother of thousands – blessing of Rebekah
In the Psalm 45 a bride is told Instead of your fathers shall be your sons.

New Testament
Jesus never married, but he attended a wedding ceremony John 2 and he blessed children who were brought to him Mark 10:13-15.

Christianity is a religion which incorporates the idea of marriage and family life.

The wedding service the priest teaches that in marriage husband and wife may know each other in love and have children and be blessed in caring for them and bringing them up in accordance with God’s will.
The service may also include a specific prayer that the couple may have children.

Implications of this
Families provide love, comfort, protection and support for each other.

Children learn about Christianity from their parents – the meaning of festivals, the importance of prayer and the value of the Bible as scripture.

Children learn about the importance of Christian caring – for those who are in need, Christian charity and giving.

Children learn about Christian values from their parents, kindness, honesty and the need for forgiveness.

Children learn that family life teaches important things about a stable society.
