Explain the reasons why one well-known Christian worked to overcome prejudice and discrimination

First choose your well-known Christian

1. Martin Luther King Jnr – America. His life is well documented in your textbook.

2. Trevor Huddleston – South Africa. His life is well documented in your textbook.

3. Nelson Mandela – South Africa. Not a good choice. His direct links with Christianity are not easy to see. He may be a Christian, but were his motives Christian?

4. Mother Teresa – India. Good choice but do you have enough facts about her life? Her main work was to help the dying. I am not sure her motive was to overcome prejudice.

5. Desmond Tutu – South Africa. Do you have good facts about his life? He could be said to be at work in order to overcome prejudice, but again I am not sure this was ever his main work.

I would go for 1. or 2.

1. Martin Luther King Junior
Know the facts of his life. Remember that he worked in America.
His reasons for wanting to fight against prejudice were
1. He was brought up on the Bible and he felt that Jesus showed care for all people
2. He hated the attacks on black people by the Ku Klux Klan
3. He did not believe in revenge. Christians must be prepared to suffer.
4. Rose Parkes incident 1955 which led to the bus boycott.
5. He followed a policy of non-violent protest.
6. 1968 he was shot dead.

2. Trevor Huddleston
Know the facts of his life.
1. He was greatly affected by the poverty he found in the UK.
2. He lived in the 1930’s when there was a lot of unemployment.
3. 1943 he trained as a monk with the Community of the Resurrection at Mirfield.
4. He was sent to work in South Africa in Sophiatown.
5. Explain about Apartheid.
6. He worked against the South African government to secure rights for black people.
7. He encouraged boycotts especially in sport, pop music and trade.
8. Eventually he caused so many problems for the South African government that he was deported.
