RELIGIOUS STUDIES AND FILMS

Some films which teachers have found useful when shown to classes

JUDAISM

HOLOCAUST
Schindler's List Still an amazing film - very long - but useful
Jakob the Liar This says a lot about life in the Ghettos
The Pianist Jess says "it's better than Schindler's list!"
The Diary of Anne Frank Tried and tested - good website too
Amen Stern stuff on Nazis and RC church
JUDAISM
Keeping the Faith Quite long, but good insights into the lives of a rabbi and a priest. Very funny. Worksheets available - contact webmaster
Yentl Some people rave about this film. It's all right, but not for me.
Prince of Egypt It tells the Exodus story well. I found it useful for the Passover legend. (animated cartoon)
ANTI-SEMITISM
Fiddler on the Roof Good providing you can stand the music. Useful on pogroms
Exodus Dated acting and film techniques. Good story though.
RACE RELATIONS
Wondrous Oblivion Jews and race relations. England in 1960s. Life as we would like it to have been - not as it was.

CHRISTIANITY

This is a difficult one. There are thousands of Christian films. Many I would prefer not to use in the classroom. Also some of the really good films are now very dated. Here are some of the better ones. I have also restricted myself to what is available on video or DVD. Video format VHS PAL
JESUS FILMS
Jesus of Nazareth A classic from 1977 Still available on video and DVD. Original cast of Robert Powell and Anne Bancroft.
The Greatest Story Ever Told Again - sound stuff with Charlton Heston and Pat Boone. Good if you can use it.
King of Kings Yet another classic - but now over 40 years old.Available only on DVD.
The Last Temptation of Christ Not your average Bible story. Available on DVD.
Jesus Christ Superstar I could use bits of this. eg the role of Judas, or the theology of the 4th Gospel.
The Life and Times of Jesus Awaiting review
The Miracle Maker Very highly thought of by many.
The Passion
of the Christ
Video and DVD reduced in price if you buy on line. It carries an over 18 ticket - could you use it?
SAINTS etc
Quo Vadis Very, very old, but an epic. I could still use bits of it - on a bad day! 1951 re-released 2001 on video
The Nun's Story The nun who questioned her calling while serving in Africa
Agnes of God A nun is accused of a child's murder. Worth a look. Now only on DVD.
Bernadette Animation - It's full title is Bernadette Princess of Lourdes. Hard to find these days.
CHRISTIAN HISTORY
Becket This is the 1964 film with Peter O'Toole. Now only available on DVD.
Romero The story of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador - released 2000
