COURSES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS
The scene here is quite interesting and complex. Examination Boards tend to run their own INSET using their own examiners - at least that is the case with OCR. Jon Mayled though appears at other venues for other companies.
Heythrop College also has a great interest in this field. On their staff is Dr Peter Vardy who appears with Julie Arliss as Wombat Education. The two of them also run courses for Richard Huish College at a large number of centres around the country. The college sends out literature about these courses,but makes no mention of them on its website.
Also on the staff of Heythrop College is Dr Michael Lacewing who runs courses called ALA (A Level Philosophy). He, like Peter Vardy has both student and teacher conferences.
Philip Allan Updates also have conferences, designed mainly for those working with Edexcel. Their teacher conferences are usually led by Gordon Reid and Sarah Tyler. Their guest speakers on these occasions are impressive eg Richard Swinburne and Keith Ward.
SFE are in a much less specialist market. Their conferences offer a wide range of topics and they tend to use their own trainers, who are teachers and advisers rather than lecturers and academics. Their conferences and seminars look impressive, but are more expensive.
